Ryan Bell

Premier Defamation Attorney

Ryan Bell, KB&A’s lead defamation lawyer, has a depth of experience practicing defamation law that is likely unrivaled in the Western United States. With defamation making up a major portion of his practice for well over a decade, Mr. Bell has litigated and re-litigated numerous defamation issues under the unique legal framework that governs defamation law in this area, representing both businesses and individuals. He has handled matters ranging from simple disputes over negative online reviews to complex litigation involving multi-million-dollar businesses claiming millions in damages. The outcomes of these cases have been overwhelmingly positive for Mr. Bell’s clients.

Defamation is an area of law that turns on subtle rules of law and doctrines that frequently evolve based on new rulings from Utah’s appellate courts. Many lawyers are willing to take defamation cases, but nearly all lack the depth of experience in this area that Mr. Bell has acquired. The deep experience Mr. Bell and his team at KB&A have accumulated in this unique area provides a significant advantage to their clients.

Representative Cases:

  • Achieved complete victory on behalf of client being sued for defamation based on public service postings she circulated warning the public of the actions of a conman, winning dismissal of all claims via successful summary judgment motion and oral argument.
  • Represented candidate for United States Senate in suit against national Super PAC who ran negative ad about candidate.
  • Received Final Award in long-running California arbitration over claims of fraud and mismanagement in successful nutritional products company. Award absolved KB&A’s client on all substantive claims and declined to grant emergency punitive relief requested by opponents.
  • Represented well-known health supplements brand in complex dispute against former manufacturer who sued for breaches of contract, trade secret misappropriation, and defamation.
  • Prevailed on motion to exclude economic damages on the eve of trial on behalf of client being sued by ex-husband for defamation. After jury selection, the Court heard KB&A’s motion to exclude all economic damages, resulting in complete exclusion of economic damages of approximately $1,000,000. The case settled soon afterward, before trial.
  • Prevailed on motion to exclude $800,000 damages claim in defamation dispute between energy companies processing waste in Uinta Basin. KB&A’s motion wiped out all damages alleged in case, forcing plaintiff to amend complaint to allege new claims.

Praise from Clients:

My case was a very long and extremely difficult to get through to the end.  I never would have made it the distance without all of the help I received from Ryan.  He always seemed to do the right thing. Communication was always top notch from Ryan.  I never one time felt I did not get a response to any question or concern in a timely manner.  His litigation skills were just plain fun to watch.  He was so aware of what needed to be accomplished, and was very aware of how to get there.  He was quick with secondary, on-the-fly questions during depositions and at trial.  He was always relaxed, never showed frustration, and was always professional.  He was always prepared. Without Ryan, his expertise, his attitude, his kindness, his total professionalism, and his giving of hope, I do not know where I would be today.

When I first realized that I was being sued for defamation over a couple honest reviews I wrote online, I didn’t think much of it.  Quickly, I realized the case was going to be something that required a professional team to help manage.  I received a letter from Mr. Bell offering to help, and after researching many attorneys and law firms it was clear he was the best defamation attorney in Utah to handle this case.  Mr. Bell’s integrity and honesty throughout the case made it clear I made the right choice.  I highly recommend Mr. Bell, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone I know.

-Dr. Stephen Giordano, Carolina Age Management Institute

Thanks for all your help and especially the fire drills.  You have been wonderful throughout the process.  Much appreciated!  I could not have asked for a better attorney.

-Dr. Lee Walker, American Society of Implant and Reconstructive Dentistry

Ryan Bell represented me in a difficult and “unusual” defamation case.  Ryan has an incredible way with people and putting one at ease; he is quite professional.  Regarding my representation, Ryan expressed just the right amount of confidence in my case while at the same time presenting the weaker issues.  He would give his opinion on how we should approach certain things, but at the same time he always made me feel that I was the ultimate decision maker.  He was timely with his responses and I never left a meeting feeling as though I wasn’t his top priority.  I have recommended Ryan and his firm in my professional work and would highly recommend Ryan personally for anyone needing representation.

-Mickey Jacobs, Individual Defamation Client

Mr. Bell is an outstanding attorney that was extremely helpful in my civil action.  He was organized, detailed, and well prepared for trial.  In pre-trial hearings before the judge, he was knowledgeable about subject matter that opposing counsel was not versed in, and the judge required law clerks to research to understand to the same extent as Mr. Bell.  At trial, Mr. Bell was articulate and confident while proffering, sharp with cross-examination, and ensured that I was not left exposed on direct questioning.  Overall, I felt extremely comfortable with Mr. Bell’s services and the results that were completed because of him.

-Teri Smith, Individual Defamation Client

Ryan Bell represented our company on a business case that eventually went all the way to the Utah Supreme Court. It ended in a favorable decision for us. I felt Ryan was professional and well versed in the law. I also felt he was efficient in his approach and felt his billings were reasonable for the service performed.
