Scott D. Thorpe holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from Utah State University, a MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley, and a JD from the S. J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah. He teaches attorneys the nuances of software patents and intellectual property law through national continuing education programs. His practice emphasizes software patents, particularly data science and machine learning innovations, graphical user interfaces, and commercial processes, and semiconductor patents.

Scott has an extensive technical background and engineering expertise in software, semiconductors, medical devices, and electronics. He is experienced in both creating and defeating intellectual property protection. He has organized intellectual property consortia, created agreements for the sharing and development of intellectual property, directed the creation of industry standards, and promoted and marketed cooperative intellectual property.

Scott has studied Chinese intellectual property law and commercial law at Ren Min University in Beijing, and has made a personal study of Chinese intellectual property law practice. He speaks and reads Chinese.

Scott is the author of How to Think Like Einstein, Revolutionary Strategies of the Founding Fathers, The Retirement Crisis, and is a frequent media commentator on Albert Einstein and the American Revolution. He also speaks and leads seminars on fostering creativity, innovation, and problem solving skills. Scott is an avid skier, mountain biker, triathlete, and obstacle racer.
